Energy Efficiency

The Food and Beverage Processing Industry

As a U.S. frontrunner in green transition efforts, California has generated substantial reductions in private energy consumption over the past decades. Now the state is aiming to create similar results in industrial and commercial buildings, and the industrial sector alone accounts for more than 20% of California’s emissions.

California has some of the most progressive green transition policies in the U.S, for example significant incentive schemes and programmes for industrial energy efficiency. One example is the Food Production Investment Program (FPIP), that has awarded $118 million to process efficiency upgrades in the California Food and Beverage industry since 2018 – for upgrading compressors, motors and Variable Frequency Drives, heat recovery, refrigerators, boilers/evaporators and much more. Totally the upgrades are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 164.000 tons CO2e annually.

The Danish food & beverage industry has been through a similar transition over the last couple of decades, led in large by policy and support programs from the Danish Energy Agency. These programs have motivated Danish companies to invest in technological innovation and facility upgrades, resulting in significant long-term cost savings via reduced energy and water input, and substantial carbon reductions. These solutions and technologies are now very relevant to California - as the Californian food & beverage processors begin to invest in green improvements of their production facilities, there will be an opportunity for Danish suppliers to bring their technological expertise and solutions to the market.

The Sustainable Industry Alliance

To target this opportunity, the Energy Efficiency Advisory has created the Sustainable Industry Alliance (SIA) – a group of leading Danish energy and water technology providers, all aiming to expand their activities in the Californian food & beverage industry.

The Sustainable Industry Alliance connects the Danish suppliers to the Californian food and beverage processing industry to offer a comprehensive assortment of components, services, and solutions. Common to all the suppliers is the lifetime cost competitiveness of their solutions, realized by significantly lower energy and resource input and reductions in costly output. Additionally, their innovative solutions are designed holistically to reduce manual labor and to enable a higher degree of automation, which minimizes operational risk and enhances output and flexibility.

The Sustainable Industry Alliance shares knowledge and experiences with U.S. processors who are interested in understanding the potential of energy and resource efficient solutions and how these different solutions apply to their operations.
